x

Common values are 1.5 for time-and-a-half and 2 for double time.

Result

Overtime pay
$300.00

Gross overtime earnings for the overtime hours entered.

How It Works

The calculator multiplies your base hourly rate by the overtime multiplier to get the overtime hourly rate.

It then multiplies the overtime hourly rate by the number of overtime hours. The result is overtime pay only, not total weekly pay.

Use 1.5 for time-and-a-half, 2 for double time, or the multiplier stated in your employment agreement or local overtime rules.

Useful next steps

Overtime pay formula

overtimePay = baseHourlyRate * overtimeHours * overtimeMultiplier
  • baseHourlyRate is normal gross hourly pay.
  • overtimeHours is the number of overtime hours.
  • overtimeMultiplier is the premium applied to overtime hours.

What the Numbers Mean

Base hourly rate
Normal gross hourly pay before applying any overtime premium.
Overtime hours
The number of hours paid at the overtime multiplier rather than the base rate.
Overtime multiplier
The premium applied to the base rate, such as 1.5 for time-and-a-half or 2 for double time.
Overtime pay
Gross overtime earnings for the overtime hours entered. Regular non-overtime pay is separate.

Assumptions

  • The result is overtime pay only, not total pay for the period.
  • The calculator assumes all overtime hours use the same multiplier.
  • Taxes, deductions, bonuses, and payroll rounding rules are not included.
  • Overtime eligibility and the correct multiplier depend on local rules, job classification, and employer policy.

Worked Examples

Time-and-a-half overtime

Input
$26 base rate, 8 overtime hours, 1.5x multiplier
Output
$312 overtime pay

The overtime rate is 26 x 1.5 = 39. Multiply 39 by 8 overtime hours.

Double time overtime

Input
$32 base rate, 5 overtime hours, 2x multiplier
Output
$320 overtime pay

The overtime rate is 64 per hour, multiplied by 5 hours.

Custom overtime multiplier

Input
$21.50 base rate, 6 overtime hours, 1.25x multiplier
Output
$161.25 overtime pay

The overtime rate is 26.875 per hour, then multiplied by 6.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this determine whether I legally qualify for overtime?

No. It only calculates pay from inputs. Overtime eligibility depends on jurisdiction, role, classification, and employer policy.

What multiplier should I use?

Use the multiplier that applies to the work period, such as 1.5 for time-and-a-half or 2 for double time.

Does this include regular pay?

No. The result is overtime pay only. Add regular pay separately if you need total gross pay.

Can I enter fractional overtime hours?

Yes. Use decimals such as 2.5 for two and a half overtime hours.

Does this include my regular hourly pay?

No. It returns overtime earnings for the overtime hours entered. Add regular pay separately when estimating total pay for the pay period.

When should I not use this calculator?

Do not use it as a legal overtime eligibility test. It does not account for exempt status, daily overtime rules, weighted average rates, bonuses, or jurisdiction-specific labor law.
