Monthly to Hourly Calculator
Convert monthly income into an hourly rate using weekly hours and paid weeks per year. This is useful when a paycheck, contract, stipend, or salary is quoted monthly but you need an hourly comparison.
Result
- Hourly rate
- $23.08
- Annualized income
- $48,000.00
Gross hourly equivalent based on the monthly income and schedule entered.
How monthly to hourly conversion works
The calculator annualizes monthly income by multiplying it by 12.
It then estimates annual hours by multiplying hours per week by weeks per year.
The hourly rate is annualized income divided by annual hours. Changing weekly hours, unpaid time off, or weeks worked changes the result.
Formula
Hourly Rate = Monthly Income x 12 / (Hours per Week x Weeks per Year)Monthly income must be annualized before it can be compared with an hourly wage. The result is gross hourly pay unless the monthly amount you enter is already after tax.
- Monthly Income is the recurring monthly amount.
- Hours per Week is the expected weekly schedule.
- Weeks per Year is the number of paid or worked weeks in the year.
What the Numbers Mean
- Monthly income
- The recurring monthly pay amount before taxes, unless you intentionally enter take-home income.
- Hours per week
- The weekly schedule used to convert monthly income into an hourly equivalent.
- Weeks per year
- Use 52 for year-round work or fewer weeks for unpaid time off, seasonal work, or unpaid breaks.
Assumptions
- The calculator assumes the monthly income repeats for 12 months.
- The common default is 40 hours per week and 52 weeks per year.
- Unpaid time off, seasonal work, and unpaid overtime should be reflected in hours per week or weeks per year.
- The result is gross hourly pay if the monthly input is gross income.
Worked Examples
$4,000 per month at 40 hours a week
- Input
- $4,000/month, 40 hours/week, 52 weeks/year
- Formula
- $4,000 x 12 / (40 x 52) = $48,000 / 2,080
- Output
- $23.08 per hour
The monthly income annualizes to $48,000, then divides across 2,080 hours.
$5,000 per month at 37.5 hours a week
- Input
- $5,000/month, 37.5 hours/week, 52 weeks/year
- Formula
- $5,000 x 12 / (37.5 x 52) = $60,000 / 1,950
- Output
- $30.77 per hour
A 37.5-hour week has fewer annual hours than a 40-hour week, raising the hourly equivalent.
$3,200 per month with unpaid weeks
- Input
- $3,200/month, 30 hours/week, 48 weeks/year
- Formula
- $3,200 x 12 / (30 x 48) = $38,400 / 1,440
- Output
- $26.67 per hour
Using 48 weeks accounts for unpaid time away from work.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I convert monthly income to hourly pay?
Multiply monthly income by 12, then divide by hours per week multiplied by weeks per year.
Does this assume 40 hours per week?
The default is 40 hours per week, but you should enter the weekly hours that match the role or schedule.
Should I use gross or net monthly income?
Use gross monthly income for a gross hourly comparison. Use take-home monthly income only if you intentionally want an after-tax hourly estimate.
How does unpaid time off affect the result?
Fewer paid or worked weeks reduce annual hours, which changes the hourly equivalent. Use fewer than 52 weeks when time off is unpaid.
Can I use this for part-time monthly pay?
Yes. Enter the monthly income and your part-time weekly hours. The calculator will convert that schedule into hourly pay.
Is this the same as monthly to yearly income?
No. Monthly to yearly income only annualizes the income. This calculator also divides by work hours to estimate hourly pay.
